The Roslyn Candy Company

Roslyn Candy Comapny LogoLast Summer, we featured a story about the new candy shop in Roslyn.  Recently, however, the candy shop changed ownership and has re-launched as the Roslyn Candy Company.  Much of the same great vintage candy and Winegar’s Ice Cream is still available at the shop, but now there is an even greater focus on the creation of hand crafted specialty chocolate treats. We sat down with owners Otto and Alesha to learn more about the shop’s new focus.  They are just getting things started, so be sure to swing by and to say hello and try some delicious chocolates.  The shop’s spring hours are 11am to 5pm every day except for Tuesday.

The Brick Saloon in Roslyn is well known for its 23 foot long running water spittoon at the foot of the bar.  But on Saturday, March 9th, the bar stools will be removed and the spittoon will be transformed into a 23 foot river raceway that attracts boating competitors from far and wide.  While there are four separate race classes (soap & wax, paper & plastic, motor & experimental, and wooden), the most fiercely competitive category is usually the wooden boat class. The Brick will open at 10am on the 9th and registration will begin at 11am.  The races will kick off at 1pm and usually last until about 7pm.  Following the races, be sure to stick around for The Brick Nautical Ball at 9pm, featuring the Shivering Denizens.  If you enjoy good beer, fun folks, the spirit of competition and music that gets you dancing – there is no better event to attend than the Spittoon Races and Nautical Ball at the Brick Saloon.

Official Classes and Specifications:

All races are run on a double elimination format.

Still not sure how this works?  Feel free to check out these highlight videos from 2011 and 2012.

The Roslyn Theatre Focuses on Digital

theater1In 2013, the movie industry is converting to digital technology, which will render traditional 35 millimeter film prints obsolete.  While this is a logical step for the film industry, it is not an easy transition for many small theaters across the country, and the Roslyn Theatre is no exception.   By the end of the year, the Roslyn Theatre needs to spend $54,000 on a digital projector upgrade.

The theater has been open for over 34 years and the Donaldson family (who run the theatre) are driving very hard to keep it operational beyond 2013.  Toward this goal, the theatre will be participating in a variety of fundraising efforts in the near future. On Saturday, January 19th, the theater will be showing The Runner Stumbles (a film shot in Roslyn starring Dick Van Dyke) for a suggested donation of $10 to go toward the digital upgrade.  Additionally, On February 16th, Tyrannosaurus Grace will be playing a benefit concert at the Brick in support of the upgrade.   Tom Pickerel prints of the Roslyn Theatre are also on sale at the theatre in support of this effort Roslyn Theaterfor $25 each.

Wendy and I certainly can’t imagine Roslyn without the Roslyn Theatre.  In Summer and Winter, it is a wonderful place to escape to the movies.  Frankly, it has ruined the larger, more traditional theater experience for us.  If you’ve never been to the Roslyn Theater, please don’t hesitate to come to Roslyn for a movie and to show your support – showtimes are available on the theatre’s website.

If you’d like to contribute to the cause, a fund has been set up at Sterling Savings Bank under the name “Roslyn Theatre Digital Equipment Fund” or you can make donations directly to the theatre at PO Box 412 Roslyn, WA 98941.  Please continue to check back with WhyRoslyn.com or the Roslyn Theatre’s Facebook page for details about how you can help the theatre as opportunities arise.

This is a perfect time of year to check out the over 600 miles of groomed recreational trails this area has to offer. A trail map is downloadable from the Cle Elum Roslyn Chamber of Commerce that includes detailed information about the following trail systems: Crystal Springs, Lake Easton, Salmon La Sac, Easton Reload, Gold Creek, Kachess, Price Creek Westbound, Blewett Pass, Elk Heights, Manastash, Mineral Springs, Reecer Creek, Last Resort, Taneum, Teanaway / 29 Pines, and Woods and Steel. Many of the trails have easy access to lodging and dining options in Cle Elum, Roslyn, and Ronald.

Exploring Coal Mines Trail

Coal Mines Trail is a pleasant, 4.7 mile, path that allows visitors to stroll in the footsteps of coal mining history. Though the trail actually starts in Cle Elum and extends to Ronald, it is easily accessible from Roslyn near the South-East end of Runje Field.

The trail follows the path of thCoal Mines Traile Northern Pacific Railroad branch line developed in 1886 to transport coal from the Roslyn/Cle Elum Coal Field.  In 1887, the branch was extended to the #3 Mine where Ronald developed.  The Roslyn/Ronald line was operated until 1986, and then in 1994, it began its conversion to this public recreational trail.

Because this is a well maintained and level path, exploring the trail is a great way to spend the day in any season and for people of all ages.
