About Roslyn

Roslyn, Washington (population 950-ish) was founded in 1886 as a coal mining town by Logan M. Bullet, vice president of the Northern Pacific Coal Company. Legend has it, it was named after Roslyn, Delaware, where his love interest was said to reside. Just off I-90 and only a couple of miles Northwest of Cle-Elum, Roslyn is a mecca for Winter and Summer recreation activities.  Hiking and Snowmobiling are the most popular activities, but Roslyn and the surrounding area are also major destinations for camping, fishing, horseback riding, mountain biking, and golf.

During the early 90’s, Roslyn provided the backdrop for the television series Northern Exposure. In the series, Roslyn played the role of the fictional town of Cicely, Alaska.  Today, many of the buildings look just as they did when the series concluded over 30 years ago.

In addition to outdoor recreation, the town is also home to the Roslyn Museum, the Roslyn Historical Cemetary, the Roslyn Brewery and “The Brick,” which is the oldest continuously operating tavern in Washington (exteriors of The Brick were used for the fictitious tavern of the same name in Northern Exposure). It was opened in 1889 by John Buffo and Peter Giovanni.  However, it didn’t take the name “The Brick” until 1889 when the tavern was rebuilt from 45,000 bricks.  The tavern is also well known for its working 23 foot running water spittoon that sits at the foot of the bar.

Roslyn sits right in the middle of the Upper Kittitas County – which is one of the most beautiful year round regions of Washington State.  Whether you’re looking for something to do in the Summer or Winter, in the great outdoors, or in some of the state’s oldest historical buildings, Roslyn and the surrounding area is bound to exceed your expectations.  At only 90 minutes, the drive from Seattle to Roslyn is well worth the journey – be it for a day, a weekend, or as long as your heart desires.
